Itinerary
Morning:
Departure from Nairobi: Begin your journey early in the morning with a drive (or flight) from Nairobi to Meru National Park, which is approximately 5-6 hours by road.
Arrival and Check-in: Arrive at your lodge or camp in Meru National Park. Popular options include Elsa’s Kopje, Ikweta Safari Camp, or Rhino River Camp.
Afternoon:
Lunch at the Lodge: Enjoy a hearty lunch at your accommodation while soaking in the beautiful views of the park.
Afternoon Game Drive:
After settling in, head out for an afternoon game drive. Meru National Park is home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino) and other unique species like Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, and lesser kudu.
Sundowner: End your game drive with a sundowner—a relaxing drink in the bush while watching the sunset.
Dinner and Overnight: Return to your lodge for a delicious dinner and a peaceful night’s rest surrounded by the sounds of nature.
Early Morning:
Sunrise Game Drive: Start your day with an early morning game drive, the best time to spot predators like lions and leopards as they are most active. This is also an excellent opportunity to see elephants and buffalo grazing in the morning light.
Breakfast:
Return to your lodge for a leisurely breakfast after the game drive.
Mid-Morning:
Visit the Rhinos at the Rhino Sanctuary: Explore the Meru Rhino Sanctuary, a fenced-off area within the park dedicated to protecting endangered black and white rhinos. It's one of the few places in Kenya where you can see rhinos in their natural habitat.
Lunch at the Lodge:
Enjoy lunch and relax during the hottest part of the day.
Afternoon:
Scenic Drive Along Rivers: Meru National Park is crisscrossed by 13 rivers, providing unique landscapes and rich wildlife. Take a scenic drive along the Tana or Rojewero rivers to see hippos, crocodiles, and diverse birdlife.
Bush Walk: (Optional)
Some lodges offer guided bush walks. This is an excellent way to get closer to nature and learn about the park's flora and smaller fauna.
Evening:
Campfire and Storytelling: After another evening game drive, enjoy a cozy campfire at your lodge. Listen to fascinating stories about the park’s history, including the famous tale of Elsa the lioness from "Born Free."
Dinner and Overnight: Relax with dinner and another night in the wilderness.
Early Morning:
Final Game Drive: Squeeze in one last early morning game drive to spot wildlife you may have missed on the previous days. Early mornings provide incredible photographic opportunities as the light is soft and wildlife is more active.
Breakfast and Check-out:
After your final game drive, return to the lodge for breakfast and check-out.
Mid-Morning:
Optional Visit to Adamson’s Falls: If time allows, visit the beautiful Adamson’s Falls on the Tana River, named after George Adamson, who famously worked with Elsa the lioness.
Departure:
Begin your journey back to Nairobi, either by road or by taking a short flight from Meru airstrip.
Arrival in Nairobi:
Arrive back in Nairobi in the late afternoon or early evening, marking the end of your Meru National Park expedition.
